A Computer and Internet Glossary
When you use computers and the Internet in your business, it’s all too easy to start feeling like you’re drowning in a sea of nonsense. Computer-related things tend to have a language all their own, and while you don’t need to know all of it, there are many confusing words and phrases that you’re going to come across sooner or later. Here’s a quick primer.
Bandwidth. Bandwidth is the amount of data that your website can send each second, as well as the amount of data that the visitor to your website can receive. If either one doesn’t have enough bandwidth, then the website will appear slowly. For this reason, you should choose a host with plenty of bandwidth, as well as testing that your site doesn’t take too long to download on slow connections.
Browser. A browser is the software (see below) that visitors to your site use to view it. The most popular browser is Microsoft’s Internet Explorer, which comes with Windows.
Cookie. Cookies are data files that your site can save on the computer of someone who visits that site, to allow it to remember who they are if they return. You will find that problems people have in ordering from you will almost inevitably be related to cookies — they will need to have them turned on.
Download. Transferring data from a website to a computer.
Favourite. A favourite is a website that a user has stored to look at again, by choosing ‘Add to Favourites’ in their browser’s menu.
FTP. File Transfer Protocol. This is a common method of uploading (see below) files to your website.
Javascript. A common language for writing ’scripts’ on websites, which are small programs that make the site more interactive. Another common cause of problems for visitors.
JPEG. Joint Photographic Experts Group. This is the name of the most popular format for pictures on the web, named after the group that came up with it. If you want to put pictures on your website, you should save them as JPEGs.
Hardware. Hardware is computer equipment that physically exists. It is the opposite of software.
Hosting. If you’ve got a website out there on the Internet, then you’ll be paying someone for hosting. It is the service of making your site available for people to see.
HTML. HyperText Markup Language. A kind of code used to indicate how web pages should be displayed, using a system of small ‘tags’. The ‘b’ tag, for example, causes text to appear in bold, and the ‘img’ tag displays a picture.
Hyperlink. A hyperlink is when a piece of text on a website can be clicked to take you to another site, or another page on the same site. For example, if clicking your email address on your website allows someone to email you, then your email address is a hyperlink.
Programming. This is when the computer is given instructions to tell it what to do, using one of many ‘programming languages’. Programming languages for the web include PHP and Perl.
Server. The server is where your website is stored, and it is the server that people are connecting to when they visit the site. If someone tells you, for example, that your server is ‘down’, it means that your website is inaccessible. Note that server refers both to the hardware and software of this system.
Software. Programs that run on the computer, or that make your website work. Microsoft Word is software, for example, as is Apache (the most popular web server software). Opposite of hardware.
Spider. Don’t be scared if a spider visits your website! Spiders are simply programs used by search engines to scan your site and help them decide where it should appear when people search. It is good to be visited by spiders, as it means you should start appearing in search engines soon.
Upload. Uploading is when you transfer data from your own computer to your website. For example, you might upload your logo, or an article you’ve written. Opposite of download.
URL. Uniform Resource Locator. This is just a short way of saying ‘web address’, meaning what you have to type in to get to your website. Sometimes pronounced as ‘Earl’.

Increase Computer Speed Three Cheap Solutions
Perhaps you’ve noticed your computer running a tad slower lately. There are no signs of a virus, or other mischief. It just seems to lumber along. Maybe it is only a matter of perception, because you can compare it to your buddy’s pc, and it goes like lightning.
Buying a new computer isn’t the only answer. Actually, there are three things you can do to speed up your machine, that are low cost solutions, and you can do them yourself.
First, when was the last time you defragmented your hard drive? As your hard drive becomes crowded with data, it has to search for space to put things, sometimes putting part of a file here, part over there. When you want to work with a file, time is wasted getting it all together.
Defragmenting overcomes this. It organizes things, like a librarian would a bookshelf. All the fragmented files are brought together, so your hard drive can quickly serve up what you need.
In Windows XP, go to Accessories, select System Tools, then click on Disk Defragmenter. Click on Defragment, and let the program run. It may take several minutes to do its work, but be patient. The results will be worth it.
Second, if you have an older computer, did you know your hard drive and CD-ROM may be sharing the same ribbon cable? Think of that. Two of the buziest devices in your machine sharing the same highway to the motherboard. Now, what happens when you get a lot of traffic on a highway? It slows down, doesn’t it? Why not give each of them their own road?
Get another ribbon cable, which will cost about $5. Plug it in to the back of the CD-ROM, and the secondary IDE port on your motherboard. On the back of the CD-ROM, you’ll notice a jumper that can be set as “slave”, “master”, or “cable select”. Move the jumper to “master”.
Third, get more RAM, if you have extra slots for it. You can double the effective speed of your computer, particularly for working with large files, things like photos, video, and 3-D. It can be easily installed. You just plug it in with your fingers.
Find out what kind you need by reading the label on the RAM that is already in place. If it’s an older computer, your local store may not stock it, but don’t worry. Plenty is available on the internet, and the older types are dirt cheap.

Definition Of A Survivable Computer System

A computer system, which may be made up of multiple individual systems and components, designed to provide mission critical services must be able to perform in a consistent and timely manner under various operating conditions. It must be able to meet its goals and objectives whether it is in a state of normal operation or under some sort of stress or in a hostile environment. A discussion on survivable computer systems can be a very complex and far reaching one. However, in this article we will touch on just a few of the basics.
Computer Security And Survivable Computer Systems

Survivable computer systems and computer security are in many ways related but at a low-level very much different. For instance, the hardening of a particular system to be resistant against intelligent attacks may be a component of a survivable computer system. It does not address the ability of a computer system to fulfill its purpose when it is impacted by an event such as a deliberate attack, natural disaster or accident, or general failure. A survivable computer system must be able to adapt, perform its primary critical functions even if in a hostile environment, even if various components of the computer system are incapacitated. In some cases, even if the entire “primary” system has been destroyed.
As an example; a system designed to provide real-time critical information regarding analysis of specialized medications ceases to function for a few hours because of wide spread loss of communication. However, it maintains the validity of the data when communication is restored and systems come back online. This computer system could be considered to have survived under conditions outside of its control.
On the other hand, the same system fails to provide continuous access to information under normal circumstances or operating environment, because of a localized failure, may not be judged to have fulfilled its purpose or met its objective.
Fault Tolerant And Highly Availability Computer Systems

Many computer systems are designed with fault tolerant components so they continue to operate when key portions of the system fail. For instance; multiple power supplies, redundant disk drives or arrays, even multiple processors and system boards that can continue to function even if its peer component is destroyed or fails. The probability of all components designed to be redundant failing at one time may be quite low. However, a malicious entity that knows how the redundant components are configured may be able to engineer critical failures across the board rendering the fault tolerant components ineffective.
High availability also plays a role in a survivable computer system. However this design component may not maintain computer system survivability during certain events such as various forms of malicious attack . An example of this might be a critical web service that has been duplicated, say across multiple machines, to allow continuous functionality if one or more the individual web servers was to fail. The problem is that many implementations of high availability use the same components and methodology on all of the individual systems. If an intelligent attack or malicious event takes place and is directed at a specific set of vulnerabilities on one of the individual systems, it is reasonable to assume the remaining computer systems that participate in the highly available implementation are also susceptible to the same or similar vulnerabilities. A certain degree of variance must be achieved in how all systems participate in the highly available implementation.

How Do These Differences Impact A Survivable Computer System

In many cases when I am discussing the security of systems with customers, the question of business continuity and disaster recovery come up. Most companies that provide a service that they deem critical just know the system needs to be operational in a consistent manner. However, there is typically little discussion about the various events or scenarios surrounding this and that can lead to great disappointment in the future when what the customer thought was a “survivable computer system” does not meet their expectations. Some of the items I like to bring up during these conversations is what their computer systems goal and objective is, what specifically does continuous operation mean to them, and specifically what constitutes an attack, failure, or accident that can cause loss of operation or failure to meet objectives.
A failure may be defined as a localized event that impacts the operation of a system and its ability to deliver services or meet its objectives. An example might be the failure of one or more critical or non-critical functions that effect the performance or overall operation of the system. Say, the failure of a module of code that causes a cascading event that prevents redundant modules from performing properly. Or, a localize hardware failure that incapacitates the computer system.
An accident is typically an event that is outside the control of the system and administrators of a local / private system. An example of this would be natural disasters such as hurricanes, if you live in south Florida like I do, or floods, or wide spread loss of power because the utility provider cut the wrong power lines during an upgrade to the grid. About two years ago, a client of mine who provides web based document management services could not deliver revenue generating services to their customers because a telecommunications engineer cut through a major phone trunk six blocks away from their office. They lost phone and data services for nearly a week.
An now we come to “attack”. We all know accidents will happen, we know that everything fails at one time or another, and typically we can speculate on how these things will happen. An attack, executed by an intelligent, experienced individual or group can be very hard to predict. There are many well known and documented forms of attacks. The problem is intelligence and human imagination continuously advance the form of malicious attacks and can seriously threaten even the most advanced designed survivable computer systems. An accident or failure does not have the ability to think out of the box or realize that a highly available design is flawed because all participants use the same design. The probability that an attack might occur, and succeed may be quite low, but the impact may be devastating.

One of the reasons I wrote this article was to illustrate that it’s not all about prevention. Although prevention is a big part of survivable computer system design, a critical computer system must be able to meet its objectives even when operating under hostile or stressful circumstances. Or if the steps taking for prevention ultimately prove inadequate. It may be impossible to think of all the various events that can impact a critical computer system but it is possible to reasonably define the possibilities.
The subject of survivable computer systems is actually one of complexity and ever evolving technology. This article has only touched on a few of the basic aspects of computer system survivability. I intend on continuing this article to delve deeper into the subject of survivable computer systems.

Computer Training - Keeping Your Computer Running At Its Best
Keeping your computer running at its best requires one to maintain all aspects of the computer, all the time. Besides being a cautious user, there are many other ways to keep your computer running fast, whether it is old or new. This does not require any upgrading of computer hardware, only maintaining everything within the operating system. The following applies mostly to Microsoft-based operating systems.
Assuming you already have adequate virus and spyware protection, run these applications on a regular basis. If you are running low on free memory and CPU usage, it would be a wise decision to use Microsoft’s “msconfig” application, which is built into most operating systems by Microsoft. Clicking the start menu and selecting “run” can access this application. With the prompt window up, you just type in “msconfig” and you are ready to go. For Windows 2000 users, you will have to download this program from somewhere, just “google” it and you will find it easily. When the application pops up, click on the startup tab and uncheck all unnecessary programs that are scheduled to startup on every reboot. Doing this will ensure that no physical or virtual memory is wasted on services that are not a necessity at the present time.
A standard maintenance wouldn’t be complete without a disk defragmentation. You will want to run a disk defragmentation once a month. Many people make the mistake of running the defragmentation in normal mode, but to get the best results, you will want to reboot in safe mode before running the application. In addition to running the disk defragmentation in safe mode, you might want to run the disk cleanup application as well. This program will eliminate temporary files, including temporary files from the Internet. There are programs out there such as “CleanUp!” that will remove temporary files more effectively. Running a program such as this will often free up a decent amount of space on your hard-drive as well.
The best sequence to follow for a maintenance run of the computer would be to start out with a spyware scan and a virus scan. After those are complete, restart the computer in safe mode and run disk cleanup. When the disk cleanup is complete, you should then run the disk defragmentation, which usually takes the longest anyway. After all of those are complete you should be able to restart normally and be running topnotch. But if you are still running low on resources, then I suggest upgrading hardware and perhaps purchasing a stick of memory that fits best to you computer’s specifications. Upgrading the processor is a much more difficult process and you would have to make sure of what your motherboard supports.
Keeping in mind that operating systems use different amounts of resources, so it is suggested to change that if it is an option for you. Desktop and folder setting can also play a role in how quick everything opens. It probably isn’t too late to use Windows 98 for owners of older computers. You shouldn’t have to be forced into using an operating system you do not wish to use, but it appears that day is coming soon.
